Too Far Away…They Call Us Halfbacks
After much reflection and extensive browsing on Zillow, John and I made the heartfelt decision to embark on our new journey northward. We quickly sold our beloved Florida oasis, although the sale unfolded in an unexpected way. The buyer—ironically from Ohio—never stepped foot inside our home until after the deal was finalized. Our first meeting was as the movers busily loaded our cherished belongings onto the truck. Despite this unusual circumstance, a wave of excitement washed over us as we prepared for our exciting relocation to Wellington, Kentucky!

As we packed our bags and bid farewell to our dear friends under the warm Florida sun, we came to discover that those who move to Florida and subsequently relocate north (but not quite as far as their original home) are affectionately known as “halfbacks.” At long last, the day of departure arrived. With the title of halfbacks now fitting us, we set out with our little companion, Jacque’pot, and our grand-puppy, Lola, on an adventure to a picturesque mountaintop nestled within the rugged expanse of Daniel Boone National Forest. Our hearts brimmed with anticipation, exhilaration, and pure joy as we journeyed toward the breathtaking beauty that awaited us in Kentucky
Navigating the serpentine two-lane roads embellished with steep inclines and majestic rocky cliffs, we gradually leave behind the bustle of civilization, making our way to the charming small town of Morehead, Kentucky. The drive is nothing short of breathtaking, with the landscape unfolding in a vibrant tapestry of greens and earthy tones. Along the way, we are treated to stunning views of Cave Run Lake, a true paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. This enchanting lake area is a versatile oasis, ideal for a variety of activities—whether you’re casting a line for fish, zipping across the water on a jet ski, setting up camp under the stars, hiking the scenic trails, or simply reveling in the beauty of the local wildlife. It’s the perfect spot for anyone looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in the serene embrace of nature. If you’d like more information about campgrounds, fishing licenses, trail maps, or nearby dining and lodging options, just say the word—I would be delighted to assist further!

After a thirty-minute drive from the nearest town, we turned onto the winding gravel road that led us to our new lodge-style home, a sanctuary adorned with soaring ceilings and two inviting fireplaces. John and I are continually captivated by the journey we’ve embarked on. The transition from the sun-kissed shores of Florida to the lush, sprawling landscapes of Kentucky reveals a stunning contrast—one that is accompanied by a complex tapestry of emotions. Moving from a beach home to a mountain lodge has granted us a profound sense of renewal and rediscovery. Our new mountain retreat emanates a feeling of being grounded, warm, and protective—almost as if the earth itself is lovingly cradling us. There’s an undeniable comfort found in the embrace of the surrounding woods, the crackling stone fireplaces, and the awe-inspiring expanse of starry nights overhead. Here, the mountains encourage moments of introspection, tranquility, and a leisurely pace of life. Each day brings a surge of excitement as we eagerly await the opportunity to experience the four distinct seasons: the vibrant hues of crisp autumn leaves, the serene beauty of snowy winters, the explosion of color in wildflower springs, and the lush greenery of summer forests. Without a doubt, we are immersed in a delightful display of Mother Nature’s breathtaking gifts.
